The Imaginary Dog and the Lying Cat (Movie)

At the center of the dysfunctional Haneko family is a mother who has stopped facing reality following the death of her younger son, while every member of the family turns away from "inconvenient truths" yet continues to live together. Among them, the boy Yamabuki is the only one who faces his family as he grows up. The film is based on the novel of the same title by Haruna Terachi, who was nominated for the Japan Booksellers' Award for "Kawa no Hotori ni Tatsu Mono wa". The film is directed by Yukihiro Morigaki, whose "Rude to Love" attracted attention at film festivals around the world. This film was also selected for the competition section of the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, one of the world's 15 major film festivals, and his work is highly acclaimed both in Japan and abroad. The screenplay is by Tomoe Kanno, who won the Japan Academy Film Prize for Best Screenplay for "The Asadas". Mahiro Takasugi stars as Yamabuki Haneko, supporting the story with his solid acting skills and gentle presence. The cast also includes Marika Ito and Mai Fukagawa, who portray contrasting female characters, Yuko Ando as his mother Yukino, Yuka Kouri as his older sister Beni, Ken Yasuda as his father Jungo, Kimiko Yo as his grandmother, and Akira Emoto as his grandfather, bringing together talented actors from a wide range of generations. The lies that have piled up are the flip side of love. When their "lies" unravel, the family becomes a "family" in the true sense of the word. A mother who lives in a fantasy world, a father who escapes to his mistress, an irresponsible grandfather who only talks about his dreams, a grandmother who makes a living dealing in "lies", and an older sister who "hates lies and liars". Although they live under the same roof, each member of the family lives separately from the others, and Yamabuki continues to grow up while telling lies day after day.
