The Old Barber

北京オリンピックで近代化が進む北京の中で、昔ながらの街並みと人の優しさを持ち続ける街、胡同 (フートン)。オリンピックマラソンの経路にもなったが、その街並みは"北京の壁"と呼ばれる巨大な壁で仕切られている。 実在するチンおじいさんの純朴で素直な生き方を通じて、失われつつある「人の心」「人間の温かさ」を再び思い出させてくれる作品からのメッセージに多くの世代が共感し、岩波ホールでロングランヒットを記録。 中国・北京の旧城内を中心にある胡同 (フートン)。その細い路地には、伝統的な建築様式で作られた庶民の古い家屋が立ち並ぶ。主人公・チンさんはそんな街並みに暮らす。彼は、朝6時に起き、毎日5分遅れる古いゼンマイ時計を直し、銀髪に櫛をいれ、身だしなみを整える事から始まる。三輪自転車で顧客の家を訪問し散髪したり、マージャンを楽しみながら世間話をし、決まって夜9時には床に就く。こつこつと働き続けて81年。その静かな存在感が私たちの胸を打つ・・・"豊かに生きること"の意味を私たちに問いかける。
