MICHELANGELO GALILEI: Lute Works

[Machine Translation] Lute player Axel Wolff has a wide repertoire that includes not only works from the Baroque period, but also ensembles with saxophone that play jazz. In this work, he tackled a sonata by Michelangelo Galilei, the youngest brother of the famous astronomer Galileo Galilei. The Galileo family originally had a connection to the lute, and their father was so well versed in the instrument that he published a treatise on lute technique. Michelangelo became a lute player and eventually worked his way through Poland to the Lithuanian palaces, and in 1607 became a court orchestral player for Maximilian I of Bavaria. The "Tavulatures on the Lute" are Galilei's masterpieces, each sonata consisting of short dances in the Italian style, and Wolff's lively performance of the varied expressions of the music.

バロック期の作品だけでなく、サクソフォンとのアンサンブルはジャズの演奏もするなど幅広いレパートリーを持つリュート奏者アクセル・ヴォルフ。今作では著名な天文学者ガリレオ・ガリレイの末弟であるミケランジェロ・ガリレイのソナタに取り組んだ。元来ガリレオ家はリュートに縁があり、彼らの父はリュート奏法の理論書を出版するほど楽器に精通していた。ミケランジェロはリュート奏者になり、やがてポーランドを経てリトアニアの宮殿に仕え、1607年にはバイエルンのマクシミリアン1世の宮廷楽団奏者になった。この「タヴラチュアによるリュート曲集」はガリレイの代表作であり、各々のソナタはイタリアの様式に則った短い舞曲で構成されており、ヴォルフは多彩な表情の曲を生き生きと演奏している。
