1980年1月よりNHK総合で放送されたアニメ『ニルスのふしぎな旅』。放送開始30年を記念して、全52話を収録したDVD-BOXを発売! 原作はスウェーデンの女流作家セルマ・ラーゲルリョーブ作の童話。友情や勇気、思いやりといった不変のテーマを描いた本作は、子どもだったあの頃に見ていた大人たちのみならず、初めて見る子どもたちにも、新鮮な感動を与えてくれる。アニメーション制作はstudio ぴえろ (現・ぴえろ)。のちに『攻殻機動隊』で世界に名声を轟かせる押井守が演出を手がけた。 スウェーデン南部の農村で育ったニルスは、とてもわんぱくでわがままな少年。いつも動物をいじめてばかりいた。ある日、木箱から現れた妖精を怒らせてハムスターのキャロットとともに魔法で小さくされてしまう。小さくなったニルスは、動物の言葉がわかるようになるが、いじめてきた動物たちの仕返しを受けて追いかけまわされる。その時、飛べないガチョウのモルテンがガンの群れにからかわれ、意地になって飛び立とうとしていた。とっさにモルテンの首のひもをつかんだニルスは、一緒に大空へと飛んで行く。こうしてニルスは、モルテンやガンの群れとともに、冒険の旅をすることになる。そして、動物たちとの友情を深めながら勇気や助けあう心を学び成長していく。
