The path is always forged by those who step off the beaten track. The story follows two women, each struggling to find their place in life. They enter the then little-known world of nursing, devote themselves to protecting those who are suffering, and at times stand up against the powerful. Set during the turbulent Meiji era, this is the adventurous story of two unconventional nurses pursuing happiness. The 114th NHK morning drama series "Kaze, Kaoru" is inspired by two trained nurses, Ozeki Kazu and Suzuki Masa, and tells the story of two partners whose personalities and approaches to life are completely different. The lead roles are played by Mikami Ai as Ichinose Rin and Uesaka Juri as Oya Naomi, marking the first appearance in an NHK morning drama for both actresses. The screenplay is written by Yoshizawa Tomoko, known for NHK productions including "Hiroshige Blue" and "Lucky One." The supporting cast features talented actors including Sano Masaya, Kobayashi Toranosuke, Ikuta Erika, Tabe Mikako, Harada Taizo, Mizuno Miki, Bando Yajuro, and Kitamura Kazuki. The theme song is "Kaze to Machi" by Mrs. GREEN APPLE. Centered on the two heroines, the series celebrates the lives of every character living through this turbulent era. -- In 1885, the first nursing school was established in Japan, followed by many others. By fate, the two protagonists, Ichinose Rin and Oya Naomi, enroll in one of these schools. Rin became a single mother at a young age after a series of misfortunes. Naomi was abandoned by her parents shortly after birth and raised under the care of a church. Their classmates at the nursing school also carry burdens of their own. As they undergo nursing education, still in its infancy, they confront questions such as "What is nursing?" and "What does it truly mean to care for patients?" Rin and Naomi encounter influential figures such as Oyama Sutematsu, known as the flower of the Rokumeikan, and merchant Shimizu Usaburo, a member of the Meirokusha. As they experience the new spirit of the Meiji era, they come to understand a society where the strong and the weak coexist and search for a way to live happily while remaining true to themselves amid constant social change. After graduating, the two begin their careers as trained nurses at the same university hospital. They devote themselves to establishing nursing as a respected profession at a time when it is still poorly understood, but Rin is soon forced out of her position. Meanwhile, Naomi begins envisioning a system that would make nursing care equally accessible to everyone. Eventually, faced with the great threat of an epidemic, the two join hands once again and pioneer a new future for nursing. Four Blu-ray set.
