The concert was also a hot topic at the time as a gala concert. It took place four years after John Coltrane's untimely death and was recorded by Impulse! and eventually released, this mesmerizing performance was Alice's first performance as a leader on stage at Carnegie Hall. She had just released her fourth solo album, Journey in Satchidananda, and was deepening her spiritual quest with a five-week trip to India. Alice's band that evening (harp and piano) was a large jazz ensemble of two saxophonists (Pharaoh Sanders and Archie Shepp), two bassists (Jimmy Garrison and Cecil McVie), and two drummers (Ed Blackwell and Clifford Jarvis). The ensemble was joined by two members of Satchidananda's circle, Kumar Kramer and Tulsi Reynolds, on harmonium and tambora, respectively, for a mesmerizing jazz ensemble sound. The band performs two songs from "Journey in Satchidananda" and two songs by John Coltrane. The show serves as a chronicle of an artist in the midst of musical and spiritual emergence, a sign of things to come. Recorded on Quadraphonic, decoded to stereo for this release, and cut/mastered by Kevin Reeves.
