This is an Edo traditional hand-sururi hand-carved woodblock print depicting Ushiwakamaru. Ushiwakamaru is famous for his one-on-one battle with Benkei on the Gojo Ohashi Bridge (now called "Matsubara Bridge") and "Yoshitsune's eight-ship jump" in the battle on the ship with the rough warrior Taira no Kyoitsune.

These elements, which are also expressed in the game, are used as motifs in the background to depict Ushiwakamaru's gallant figure.

In this new project, the world view of Fate/Grand Order, which is celebrating its 9th anniversary, is expressed in Ukiyoe by Yoshiyuki Ebata, a woodblock print artist.
The motif of the "Migaraki Eirei-zu" is based on one of the representative works of Hishikawa Shigenobu, the painter who established Ukiyoe, and is synonymous with the painting, "Migaraki Bijinzu," which depicts the moment when a beautiful woman suddenly looks back, as if to capture the moment when she looks back, with her eyes momentarily averted and her dignified pose.

In addition, this "Mikaeri Eirei-zu" is painted in a unique vertical format, which is rare in the world, as seen on ukiyoe fuda (Senja-fuda) and hanging scrolls.
Ukiyo-e sometimes depicts decorative backgrounds and designs using plants, small patterns, and Japanese patterns, as in the Art Nouveau style, which is why Ukiyo-e itself originally had a role as an advertisement, poster, or tag rather than as a painting.

The "Migaraki Eirei-zu" is an Ukiyoe woodblock print that incorporates the design elements of Ukiyoe with Japanese decorations.
Ukiyoe woodblock prints are a traditional Japanese art form that symbolizes Edo culture and the playful spirit of the culturally mature Edo period common people.

Since the Edo period, craftsmen have spun off the art of engraving and printing through a master-disciple relationship.
The unique texture and rich colors of each piece, carefully printed over and over on Echizen Ikusuki Hosho, the finest Japanese paper made by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure, depict the fascinating characters of FGO.

Yoshiyuki Ebata, Printmaker
Yoshiyuki Ebata is in charge of ukiyo-e design at HANZAN Co.
In recent years, he has been involved in a wide range of activities, such as NFT art collaboration for Astro Boy, Ukiyo-e icons for companies, and other artwork that utilizes the taste of Ukiyo-e.
He has also designed products for Ukiyoe Studio, including Mirai Shonen Conan Ukiyoe, Godzilla Neon Ukiyoe, Fujiko F. Fujio 90th Anniversary Fabric Board, and GeGeGe Ukiyoe.

Comment from the Ukiyoe artist in charge
There are many different patterns of waves and bridges that have been used in Komon and Japanese patterns for a long time, and I chose a motif that seemed to fit Ushiwakamaru.

The standard pose of Ushiwakamaru is before he draws his sword, his hand on his sword, and his eyes fixed on the parapet, so I depicted Ushiwakamaru in that pose, looking down at us from above the parapet with a calm gaze.

I depicted Ushiwakamaru with his supple, antelope-like legs, which express his agility, and the sharpness of a feline or bird of prey.
