This book takes a Lacanian psychoanalytical approach to otaku subculture with a special focus on the phenomenon of the fighting bishoujo. The analysis is pretty indepth, and though they are explained in the book you might want to consult some secondary sources for the Lacanian terminology, such as the Big Other. Still, the analysis itself is trenchant and thought-provoking; it might be familiar to someone who has read Zizek, another Lacanian. However, a lot of the book is taken up by a genealogy of the fighting bishoujo, which is divided up into several subgenres. It's interesting in itself as far as it goes, but might be too simplified. The sections on Henry Darger are also fairly interesting as a case study and example of how Japanese media tropes present as radical 'outsider' art in the west. If you want a more nuanced view of Otaku, that starts from the premise that it's hardly easy, and in fact counterproductive and delusional in itself, to idly suggest that otaku are just 'seperated from reality', you will find some interesting ideas here. "Otaku know reality the best of anyone" is a controversial theory perhaps, but Saitto makes a good case for it.
