本書は初めて直接あるいは間接にしか伝わらなかったガリレイの月の素描を集成し新たに配列しなおしたものである。太陽の黒点をどう理解したものか、1611年から1613年に至るまで継続された分析もまた、優に200を超える素描や銅版画として年代順に配列してある。これによってドイツのイエズス会修道士クリストフ・シャイナーとガリレイによるアルプスをはさんだ論争が、日1日と映画のように追うことができる。ガリレイはこのとき画家仲間のロドヴィコ・チゴリの手助けを得ていた。本書によって著者はトーマス・ホッブスの『リヴァイアサン』に始まり(1999)、ゴットフリート・ヴィルヘルム・ライプニッツの『モナドの窓』(2003)に続いて、図像の力を解する基本人物たちによる初期近世3部作を完結した。芸術史、科学史、哲学史にわたる類例のない、かくもマテリアル満載で、なおかつ議論の鋭角な仕事は、ここに大きな団円を迎えることとなった。
