Description

[Machine Translation] Buraku" and "Burakumin" were supposed to have disappeared, but discrimination continues to exist in reality. Director Yusaki Mitsuwaka of the controversial "Niku no Hito" and producer Arata Oshima have finally released this documentary film that confronts the Buraku issue! In the past, there existed a group of lowly people in Japan called the "Buraku" (the Buraku people), and after the abolition of the lowly status by the "Liberation Ordinance" in 1871, the areas where they lived collectively became known as "Buraku," and the discriminatory structure remained. Today, there is no such thing as "Buraku" or "Burakumin" in terms of laws and systems. However, many Japanese people still have a deep-rooted sense of discrimination. Why does something that should not exist continue to exist? How did this discrimination begin? This film takes a variety of approaches to unravel the complex and intertwined context of the accumulated history of discrimination, from its origins and evolution to the recent "Tottori Loop Trial," and vividly depicts the structure of discrimination that is difficult to see. Directed by Yusaki Mitsuwaka, who had to abandon the theatrical release of "Niku no Hito" (2007), a film about a slaughterhouse and its workers that was well-received when it was screened in various locations. More than ten years later, with Shin Oshima, the producer of "Why Can't You Be Prime Minister" and "Kagawa, the First Ward" as the producer, and MONO, who has been active on the world stage, as the musician, they have created a documentary that is literally "unprecedented". The film, which opened at Eurospace and other venues, has been screened in more than 50 theaters nationwide, and was awarded first place in the 96th Kinema Junpo Best Ten and Bunka Eiga Best Ten in 2022. Since then, the film's message has continued to spread through independent screenings. Four years after its theatrical release, the long-awaited soft version of the film is enclosed with a commentary that includes excerpts from the pamphlet and new text. The film also includes an 18-minute video clip of a performance by the Kitashiba Liberation Taiko Preservation Society Kohfukui in Aki Takada City and a 2-minute trailer for the film's theatrical release.
