ZIPANG

[Machine Translation] Formed in 1990 by three Tsugaru shamisen virtuosos, Zipangu is a group that incorporates elements of jazz and world music in order to explore new possibilities for the Tsugaru shamisen. Their first album features original compositions that boldly deform traditional Japanese folk songs, creating a sound that is both familiar and innovative. The rhythm section features many young musicians active in the jazz world. The musical quality of the group remains at a high level. Sound production was done by Ryuta Sakamoto, a renowned bassist with a great groove, and the band has succeeded in creating a wonderful fusion of traditional Japanese sounds and current pop sounds. Hiroshi Imade, who plays harmonica and sings in Tomoe Ayato's band, also provides a bittersweet vocal performance on two of the songs.

津軽三味線の名手3人が1990年に結成したジパングは津軽三味線の新しい可能性を開拓すべく、ジャズ、ワールド・ミュージックの要素を取り入れたグループ。彼らの1stアルバムは、伝統的な日本民謡を大胆にデフォルメしたオリジナル曲を中心に、親しみやすく斬新なサウンドを創造している。リズム・セクションにはジャズ界で活躍する若手が多数参加。音楽的なクオリティも高いレベルをキープしている。サウンド・プロデュースはグルーヴ感溢れる名ベーシスト、坂本竜太が担当し、日本のトラディショナル・サウンドと現在進行形のポップ・サウンドとの見事な融合に成功している。綾戸智絵のバンドでハーモニカ、ボーカルを担当している今出宏が2曲で渋いボーカルを披露しているのも聴きもの。
