Description

[Machine Translation] A magnificent historical epic about the French Revolution directed by Jean Renoir, known for his numerous masterpieces such as Picnic, The Great Vision, The Rules of the Game, and The French Cancan. The cast includes Louis Jouvet, with whom he collaborated on "Donde Nous", Lise Dramard, and Jacques Catrin. Pierre Renoir, the director's brother, plays Louis XVI. The film was produced with the cooperation of the French Confederation of Labor and with public donations in 1938, when the Nazi invasion of Europe was underway. 1789 saw the French Revolution, and the Bastille prison in Paris was occupied by the citizens. When about 500 volunteers from Marseilles learn of this, they march to Paris in search of freedom, singing "La Marseillaise" (later to become the national anthem).... Renoir's story dramatically unfolds from various perspectives by introducing characters from different social classes. Commentary leaflet/postcard enclosed.

『ピクニック』『大いなる幻影』『ゲームの規則』『フレンチ・カンカン』など、数々の名作で知られる巨匠ジャン・ルノワール監督がフランス革命を描いた壮大な歴史大作。出演は『どん底』で組んだルイ・ジューヴェ、リーズ・ドラマール、ジャック・カトランなど。監督の実兄ピエール・ルノワールがルイ16世を演じている。なお本作はナチス・ドイツによるヨーロッパ侵攻の影が強くなる1938年、フランス労働総同盟の協力と一般の募金によって製作された。1789年フランス革命が起こり、パリのバスチーユ監獄が市民たちによって占領される。それを知ったマルセイユの志願兵約500名は、自由を求め、「ラ・マルセイエーズ」 (のちに国歌となる)を歌いながらパリへと進撃する・・・。ルノワールはそれぞれの階層からなる人物たちを登場させて、様々な視点からドラマティックに物語を展開してゆく。解説リーフレット/ポストカード封入。
