The subtitle "Romantic" and the length of the work, which is not too long, make it the most popular of Bruckner's nine symphonies. The first draft was completed in 1874, but it was revised many times before it was successfully premiered by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Hans Richter in 1881. Since then, further revisions have been made, and many editions exist. Luigi & Philharmonia Zurich used the second draft, the Novak version of 1878/80, which is the most commonly performed version today. The first draft was revised in 1878 (second draft), and only the last movement was revised in 1880 (third draft).

ファビオ・ルイージ率いるフィルハーモニア・チューリッヒによるブルックナー交響曲第4番。「ロマンティック」という副題や、長大すぎない演奏時間であることから、ブルックナーの9曲の交響曲の中で最も人気の高い作品。第1稿が完成したのは1874年だが、それから改訂が何度も行われ、1881年ハンス・リヒター指揮のウィーン・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団によって初演され成功を収めた。その後もさらに改訂作業は行われたため、多くの版が存在している。ルイージ & フィルハーモニア・チューリッヒは、現在もっともよく演奏されている、第2稿、1878/ 80年稿ノヴァーク版を使用。前述の第1稿を1878年に改訂 (第2稿)したあと、1880年に終楽章のみ改訂 (第3稿)されたものとなる。
