[Machine Translation] This is an excellent psycho-suspense film by Richard Attenborough, the master of "Gandhi" ("Gandhi") ('82) and "A Chorus Line" ('85), before he won all the Academy Awards with "Gandhi". The film depicts, with a Hitchcockian touch of suspense, how a ventriloquist with a psychotic dual personality gradually becomes one with a puppet and is driven down the road to destruction. Anthony Hopkins, who would later play Dr. Lecter in "The Silence of the Lambs" ('91) and "Hannibal" ('00) to critical acclaim, gives a monstrous performance as the insane psychopath, which can be said to be his starting point. It is also a pioneering work for the "Child's Play" series ('88- ) and "Dolls" ('87 ) and other puppet horror films that followed. He co-starred with Ann-Margret in "The Love Hunter" ('71) and "Tommy" ('75), and Burgess Meredith, well known for his role as Mickey in the "Rocky" series ('76- ). William Goldman, the famous screenwriter of "The President's Conspiracy" and "Marathon Man" ('76), adapted his own original story. --Corky (Anthony Hopkins), an introvert, is a second-rate card magician who turns into a ventriloquist with a tongue-in-cheek puppet named Fats, and becomes very successful. He eventually got a big manager named Ben ( Burgess Meredith ). Eventually, Corky gets a big chance to appear on TV, but he stubbornly refuses Ben's recommendation for a medical checkup, and suddenly abandons his work and returns to the countryside where he was born. Corky rents an old cottage by the lake and reunites with Peggy ( Ann-Margret ), the wife of Duke ( Ed Rota ), the landlord of the cottage and his first love. Peggy's relationship with her husband has cooled off, and she feels the joy of being a woman with Corky. One day, however, Ben shows up, and after an argument, Corky discovers his secret, which he has been hiding from her. Finally, Corky and Fats kill Ben and drown his body in a lake...
