The two are friends who share a motel room, but Duval is an overconfident naturopath who is thrown into emotional turmoil when the hippie-ish Spacek invites a third girl into their lives. Duval gives an impassioned performance as the conflicted "free spirit," who has an unbreakable sense of "being a good housewife" at the core of her being. The young Spacek's mysterious presence, similar to that of the psychic girl in "Carrie," is also bewitching.
