The story is set in a time when women were not yet free to study. Yentl Mendel, who lives in a Jewish community in Poland, is secretly taught the Talmud by her rabbi father. After her father died, she still wanted to study Talmud, so she decided to enter a seminary, disguised as a man and calling herself Anshel. There she meets a fellow student, Avigdor, and becomes friends with him, and she is soon attracted to him. The film includes the original trailer. A booklet explaining the film is included.
