"United States" is Paul Gilbert's return to vocal music, with a twist: he's not the primary vocalist! Instead, he's partnered with the Freddie Mercury-esque Freddie Nelson, who grew up in the same area as Paul, but until now has never collaborated with him. "United States" is an all-too-short collection of rock/pop songs recorded in the summer of 2008 that put the spotlight directly on Freddie's vocals and Paul's always incredible guitar skills. As usual, and unlike many "guitar heroes," the songwriting does not take a back seat to the shred. From the opening vocal harmony of "Paris Hilton Look-Alike" through the driving rock 'n roll of "I'm Not Addicted," you're treated with tight vocals, insanely well-crafted guitar solos and, perhaps most importantly, songs you'll find yourself trying to sing! (this might be difficult, due to Freddie Nelson's incredible vocal talents) The only negatives I can report on this CD are: 1) Track 4, Bad Times Good, is forgettable. 2) The drum mix is "dirty." It did not do the excellent playing justice. 3) This CD could have used a couple additional tracks. Way too short! If you like Paul Gilbert, this CD is a must-buy! You won't be disappointed!
