ハマーフィルムが贈るSFミステリーの傑作! 「フランケンシュタインの逆襲」や「吸血鬼ドラキュラ」で70年代ホラーブームを作ったテレンス・フィッシャー監督作品。当時、アメリカで大人気のハワード・ダフが主演を務める。1950年の『ロケットシップX-M』を一部挿入。――ロケットAS-2号の設計をするスティーブン・ミッチェル博士は、英国による人工衛星打ち上げチームのプロジェクトを手掛けていた。ある日、ヘイズ将軍の力添えもあり、搭乗型ロケット(人間ロケット)の計画に着手する事になり、喜ぶチーム。しかし、そのパーティでスティーブンの妻ヴァネッサとクレーンショウ博士の不倫関係が発覚する。やがて、打ち上げ当日になり、スティーブンは姿を消した二人の殺害容疑をかけられてしまう・・・。
