After so many poor-sounding bootlegs, Japan Live in Holland is a breath of fresh air in terms of sound quality. The concert was in my hometown at the time, and of course I was there; it made a deep impression. It still does.

1974年にデヴィッド・シルヴィアンと実弟スティーヴ・ジャンセン、故ミック・カーン、現ポーキュパイン・ツリーのリチャード・バルビエリ、そしてロブ・ディーンによって結成されたJAPANは1976年に (独)アリオラ・ハンザ・レコードと契約。元祖ヴィジュアル系と言える独特なルックスとグラマラスなサウンドは話題になるが、日本以外では評価を得ることが出来なかった。しかし1980年にヴァージン・レコードに移籍しそれぞれの個性を活かしたサウンドに変化することにより本国イギリスでも高い評価を得る。そして人気が本格化した1982年にデヴィッド・シルヴィアンとミック・カーンの音楽的方向性の違いから解散する。そんなJAPANのヴァージン・レコード時代の貴重なライヴ・アーカイヴが遂にリリース! ヴァージンへ移籍し、前作『クワイエット・ライフ (原題: Quiet Life)』の制作経験を活かし1980年にリリースした『孤独の影 (原題: Gentleman Take Polaroids)』は全英アルバム・チャートNo.45にランク・イン。ようやくイギリスでも正当な評価を獲得し、翌81年にリリースした『錻力の太鼓 (原題: Tin Drum)』は彼らにとって母国で初のビッグ・ヒットを記録する。バンドの新たな音楽的方向として東洋音楽やアフリカン・ビートなどを取り入れオリジナリティの確立により強い支持を得て、全英アルバム・チャート (No.12)とシングル・チャート (No.5「ゴウスツ」)にランク・インする。そんなJAPANは1982年秋にヨーロッパ~イギリス～日本を回る〈Sons Of Pioneers Tour〉を行い、10月9日のオランダ公演は地元ラジオ局の番組とBBCラジオのスペシャル番組で収録・放送される。今回は放送に使用された音源を使用してのリリースであり、2回のアンコールを含め収録している。このツアーでは、当時ロンドンに在住していた一風堂の土屋昌巳がギタリストとして参加している。『錻力の太鼓』で音楽的方向性を明確にしたJAPANは、このコンサートでもライヴ・バンドとしての実力を発揮し、パフォーマンスの内容は充実している。しかしこれからというときにデヴィッド・シルヴィアンとミック・カーンの音楽的方向性の違いから解散を決定。ファイナル・コンサートの地として自分たちがデビューして以来支持されてきた日本を選ぶ。輸入盤国内仕様。日本語帯、英文ライナー・ノーツ対訳付。
