The trio features Fukui with Bensuke Sakai on bass and Yoshito Eto on drums. Fukui was 56 at the time. The performance is powerful and expansive in scale, yet also delicate and razor-sharp. In the balance of spirit, stamina, and technique, he was entering a period of full maturity. He weaves heavy, lustrous lines in homage to the beloved Phineas Newborn Jr. and Tommy Flanagan, and thrillingly takes on the Wayne Shorter he admired in his youth.
