"勝つ"ためでなく"守る"ために――。 時は江戸時代、幕末。国を守るために鎖国してきた日本は今、アメリカ政府の使者ペリーに開国を迫られて揺れていた。そんな幕府に不満を抱く安中藩主・板倉勝明は、藩士を鍛えるために十五里(約58km)の道を走らせる遠足(とおあし)を開催する。優勝者の望みは何でも叶えられると聞き、それぞれの願いを胸にスタートを切った侍たち。だが、大会の裏では恐るべき陰謀が進められていた。幕府の大老が遠足を"謀反の動き"と見て、勝明暗殺の刺客を放ったのだ。そして、大会出場者の中にただ一人、この計画に気づいた男がいた。彼の名は唐沢甚内、幕府の命令で藩をスパイする"忍び"だ。長い潜入生活で、彼にはこの地に愛する妻も子もいた。「幕府か、藩か」──愛と忠誠心に揺れ動くなか、甚内は仲間たちに危機を告げ、共に戦うために走ることを決意する―。
