In The Groove

Polished jazz. Elaborately crafted rock. Sharpened funk. Absorbing them all, a powerful groove takes off. Since their formation in 1969, Soul Media had pursued a fusion of jazz and rock. Recorded in 1973, this album, "In The Groove," marked the point where that direction moved on to the next stage. It brings the sharpness of jazz to the forefront, folds in rock to sharpen its edge, and injects funk to create power and bounce. The result is powerful yet refined, simply "cool music" that cannot be fully contained by existing genres such as jazz rock, jazz funk, or fusion. This album has also been described as a response to The Crusaders, whom Jiro Inagaki was reportedly paying close attention to at the time. The approach hit the mark. With this album, Soul Media acquired a "sophisticated black feeling" and would go on toward its final destination, "Funky Stuff."
