[Machine Translation] A masterpiece of coming-of-age film that vividly depicts an ill-defined adolescence! Based on an original story by Shuji Terayama, an instructor at a reformatory, and directed by Yoichi Higashi, a former documentary filmmaker, this film was selected as one of the best Japanese films of 1978. Higashi subsequently directed "No More Cheeks" ('79), "Incarnate" ('86), and "River Without a Bridge" ('92), among others. --The third player in the Kanto Juvenile Training School was so called because he played third base for his high school baseball team. Before entering the reformatory, Saad and his friend IIB were playing with the girls' newspaper club and tennis club, but to earn money to leave town, the two couples start using girls as prostitutes. Out of trouble, Saad kills his client, a yakuza, and is imprisoned. This masterpiece vividly captures the amorphous adolescence in a documentary-like depiction of daily life in a juvenile reformatory. Aiko Morishita, who played the newspaper club member, later married Takuro Yoshida. The film was ranked No. 1 in the Kinema Junpo Top Ten.

不定形な青春をヴィヴィッドに描いた青春映画の傑作!! 少年院の教官だった軒上泊の原作を寺山修司が脚色、ドキュメンタリー映画出身の東陽一が監督して1978年の邦画ベストワンに選ばれた作品。東監督はその後、『もう頬づえはつかない』(79)、『化身』(86)、『橋のない川』(92)等を監督。――関東少年院にいるサードは、高校の野球部で三塁を守っていたのでそう呼ばれていた。少年院に入る前、サードと友達のIIBは、女子の新聞部とテニス部と遊んでいたが、町を出る資金稼ぎのため、2組のカップルは女の子を使って売春を始める。トラブルからサードは客のヤクザを殺してしまい収監されたのだ。少年院の日常をドキュメンタリー・タッチで描いて不定形な青春を鮮やかに捕らえた傑作。新聞部を演じた森下愛子はその後、吉田拓郎と結婚。 キネマ旬報ベストテン第1位。
