生まれ育った土地のわずらわしい人間関係を離れて、自立しようとする青年の旅立ちの詩。黒木和雄監督が、中島丈博の自伝的脚本を、しっかりした人間描写で演出し、『竜馬暗殺』以上の評価を得た秀作。憧れの人を演じる竹下景子の初々しさと主人子の荒っぽい幼馴染を演じた原田芳雄の好演が光る。――昭和30年代初めの土佐。20歳の盾男は、信用金庫に勤めながら、いつかシナリオ作家になることを夢見ていた。彼は幼馴染の涼子を秘かに想っていたが彼女には恋人がいた・・・。人生の祭りを夢見ながら、故郷に縛り付けられて悶々とする青年の旅立ちを、彼を取り巻く人々の猥雑で人間味豊かなエピソードを交えて描く。原田芳雄の最後の「バンザイ」は、この映画を象徴する名場面。 キネマ旬報ベストテン第2位。
