Presumably the conclusion to Baz Luhrmann's cinematic trilogy that began with "Strictly Ballroom" and followed with "William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet," "Moulin Rouge" is the most lavish, and exuberantly excessive of them all. Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman are well cast as the show's heroes with vocal talents to match, with the superb supporting cast that includes John Leguizamo, Jim Broadbent, and Richard Roxburgh. With Luhrmann's stunning visual expression of operatic excess, the anachronistic use of music doesn't even seem anachronistic. Elton John's ''Your Song'' for instance - which I've known since I was a kid - sounds like it was newly written for the film and so do the songs by the Moody Blues and Marc Bolan, and the use of Nirvana, U2, Beck and Massive Attack are hilarious and clever. Who would have thought that Jim Broadbent would one day sing Madonna's "Like a Virgin" on a major motion picture... only a genius or a total lunatic would make him do that. This is a 2-disc set containing loads of extras including featurettes, music clips and multi-angle dance footages!
