FACE TO FACE

After the worldwide success of "Benzaiten" (ISLAND '76), Osamu Kitajima went on to release "Osamu" (ISLAND '77), "Masterless Samurai" ('80 ALFA), and "Dragon King" ('81 ARISTA), while the single "Say You Will" became a major hit. Following this success, Kitajima produced "Face to Face" in Los Angeles. Originally released in 1983 on the U.S. Takoma label, founded by John Fahey, and later released in Japan in 1985, the album now receives its world-first CD release from For Life, the master rights holder. A masterpiece of oriental soul / Japanese fusion, the album interweaves Japanese instruments such as koto and shakuhachi with the soulful voices of female singers Mindy Sterling and Sylvia St. James. Featuring many accomplished musicians, including Richard Evans and Victor Feldman, it creates a one-of-a-kind sound that spans AOR, jazz-funk, and crossover. An important work that may be regarded as the culmination of Osamu Kitajima's East-meets-West sound, it is an album that shines with a unique brilliance within his career. Bonus tracks include single tracks by Cathi Linn, known for the ending theme of the anime "Cat's Eye," among others.

「弁才天」(ISLAND '76)の世界的な成功後、「OSAMU」(ISLAND '77)、「MASTERLESS SAMURAI」('80 ALFA)、「DRAGON KING」('81 ARISTA)が続けて発売されシングル「Say You Will」が大ヒット、それを受け、喜多嶋修がロサンゼルスで制作し83年に米TAKOMAレーベル (ジョン・フェイヒィ主宰)から発表、85年に国内発売された『FACE TO FACE』が原盤元フォーライフから世界初CD化。琴や尺八などの和楽器と、Mindy Sterling、Sylvia St. Jamesの女性シンガーのソウルフルな歌声が交差する、オリエンタル・ソウル/和フュージョンの傑作。Richard Evans、Victor Feldmanら名手が多数参加し、AOR～ジャズファンク～クロスオーヴァーを横断する唯一無二のサウンドを構築。喜多嶋修の東西融合サウンドの到達点とも言える重要作であり、そのキャリアの中でも特異な輝きを放つアルバムである。ボーナストラックはアニメ「キャッツ・アイ」EDで知られるキャシー・リンのシングルなど。
