名匠カザンがシネマスコープをドラマ表現において見事に使いこなしたことや、J・ディーンのあるがままの"演技"、L・ローゼンマンによる忘れらない主題曲・・・。秀作の要素が嫌味なくらいに揃った、しかし、やるせない宿命に喘ぐ青春を描いて、これほどの達成はなかろう。原作は言わずと知れた旧約聖書のカインとアベルを下敷きにしたスタインベックの長篇で、映画はその一部を元にしただけだが、小説のエッセンスが全て凝縮されている。温厚な兄だけが父に可愛がられ、冷たくされる自分の出生に疑問を持った、大農場を経営するトラスクー一家の問題児キャルは、彼らを捨てて出奔した母 (凄みのある名演J・V・フリート=オスカー助演賞)の行方を突きとめ、予想に反する答えを聞く・・・。そして、涙なしには観られない結末も素晴らしい。兄の婚約者で次第にキャルに魅かれてゆくエイブラに扮するJ・ハリスの母なる包容力も印象的。しかし、それにしてもジミー・ディーンである。
