『Shall we ダンス?』、『それでもボクはやってない』など、日本映画の歴史にその名を刻んできた映画監督・周防正行。5年ぶりの最新作に選んだテーマは、映画にまだ音がなかった時代、楽士の奏でる音楽に合わせ、自らの語りや説明で彩った活動弁士(通称: "カツベン")! 個性豊かなその語りは観客を魅了し、俳優よりも人気があった。本作は〈活動弁士〉を夢見る一人の若き青年を主人公に、個性的なキャラクターたちが織りなす、アクションあり、笑いあり、涙ありの、極上エンタテインメント! ――子どもの頃、活動写真小屋で観た活動弁士に憧れていた染谷俊太郎。"心を揺さぶる活弁で観客を魅了したい"という夢を抱いていたが、今では、ニセ弁士として泥棒一味の片棒を担いでいた。そんなインチキに嫌気がさした俊太郎は、一味から逃亡し、とある小さな町の映画館〈青木館〉に流れつく。青木館で働くことになった俊太郎は、"ついにホンモノの活動弁士になることが出来る!" と期待で胸膨らむ。しかし、そこには想像を絶する個性的な曲者たちとトラブルが待ち受けていた! 俊太郎の夢、恋の運命やいかに・・・!?
