40年前から教科書で愛される、国民的児童文学が感涙の映画化。戦後70年記念作品。長野県の小さな田舎村。7人の子供たちに恵まれ、慎ましやかながらも幸せな家族を築いていくミツ。しかし昭和12年(37年)日中戦争から始まる太平洋戦争のために7人の息子が次々と兵隊にとられ、そのたびに桐の木を植えて、ミツは息子たちの無事を祈るのだった。「お国のために」と戦地に出征する息子をただ見送らなければならない悲しみ、帰らぬ息子をひたすらに待ち続ける母の愛を描く。主人公・ミツを演じるのは鈴木京香。ミツの次男・二郎役に三浦貴大、亡き夫の同僚役に田辺誠一、その娘・サユリ役に志田未来、物語の語り部となる現代パートのサユリ役に奈良岡朋子、と演技派の豪華キャストが集結。監督は『がんばっていきまっしょい』『解夏』など丁寧な心理描写に定評のある磯村一路。
