俳優・向井理が祖母の卒寿(90歳)のお祝いに、家族や親せきと自費出版して贈った祖母の手記を、向井自ら映画化に向け7年の歳月をかけて企画してきた意欲作。主演である、祖母・芦村朋子役には尾野真千子。向井自身は祖父・吾郎を演じ、ふたりは夫婦役としては初共演となった。さらに、朋子と吾郎の末娘である現代の真美役を岸本加世子、吾郎の先輩・高杉幹夫役に駿河太郎、朋子の父親・芦村忠役にイッセー尾形、現代の朋子役を野際陽子が演じるなど、演技派の名優たちが脇を固める。また、大学生の"理"役は、新人俳優・成田偉心が起用された。脚本は、向井理の俳優としての転機となったNHK連続テレビ小説「ゲゲゲの女房」の脚本家、山本むつみ。監督には、『60歳のラブレター』(09)『神様のカルテ/神様のカルテ2』(11・14)の深川栄洋。――81歳になった芦村朋子は、不慣れな手つきでパソコンにむかい、亡くなった夫・吾郎との思い出を手記として記録していた。しかし、朋子は突然病に倒れてしまう。そんな朋子の代わりに、孫の理が『何日君再来』と題された祖母の日記をまとめていくことに。綴られていたのは今まで知ることのなかった、戦中・戦後の困難な時代を生きてきた祖母・朋子と祖父・吾郎の波乱の歴史と、深い絆で結ばれた夫婦と家族の愛の物語だった――。
