THE EXORCIST THE VERSION YOU'VE NEVER SEEN

As the recent theatrical rerun of the director's cut reaffirmed, the movie is not just a 'horror film' but an 'experience' beyond the hype. This film and 1963's "The Haunting" (the Robert Wise one, not the remake) are perfect examples that the real scares are founded on characters and the milieu (both physical and psychological) and how well the filmmaker cooks up all those elements together, and not really on the expensive special effects, although The Exorcist boasts some of the period's state-of-the-art special makeup fx by Dick Smith (who later won a 'best makeup' Oscar for Amadeus), the most influential makeup artist who is revered by all the younger artists like Rick Baker, Rob Bottin and Tom Savini. In my opinion, "The Exorcist" and "To Live And Die In L.A." are two of the absolute bestest and most ground-breaking movies William Friedkin has made so far.

もはや「リバイバル」では、片づけられない!2001年お正月ロードショー公開作品が早くもDVDで登場。ディレクターズカット版公開が証明してくれた通り、この映画は単なるホラー映画ではない、ハイプを超えた「経験」である。宣伝効果のみをねらったTVスポットで、リーガンの薄気味悪い「クモ歩き」がフィーチャされたせいか、若干ゲテモノ趣味の映画と勘違いされたのは、映画の実際の素晴らしさを知る我々にとっては美しくなかったが、そのショッカーCFの効果もあって、これまでこの作品を知らなかった世代や、見逃していた多くの人々にも見てもらえたのは幸いである。米国の最も著明な批評家Roger Ebert氏も、本作(1974年公開版)に満点をつけているほど。実際に本作や、1963年のThe Haunting(ロバート・ワイズ監督版、リメークではない方の)は、高価な特撮よりも、キャラクターと物理的そして心理的な背景環境(milieu)をフィルムメイカーがいかに巧みに表現するかが「恐怖」のベースとなることを完璧に証明してくれている。最も「エクソシスト」には、ディック・スミスによる当時最先端の特殊メイクアップが用いられているが。スミスは、後のオスカー受賞の常連となるリック・ベイカーや、ロブ・ボティーン、トム・サヴィーニ等の特殊メイクの専門家達が最も尊敬し、多くを学んだ大先生にあたるアーティストであり、彼自信、後に「アマデウス」でオスカーを受賞している。また、「エクソシスト」は、「To Live And Die In L.A.」と並び、ウィリアム・フリードキン監督の最もグラウンドブレーキングな最高傑作である。
