Fuzz hill

[Machine Translation] Noodles' new album, their first in about a year, is a mini-album containing five songs that are truly their best work. The album was produced by Sawao Yamanaka and Hitoshi Yoshida, and mixed by Hitoshi Yoshida. The fuzz in the title "Fuzz hill" may remind many of the effects pedals used on electric guitars. While the title "Fuzz hill" may refer to a device that processes the sound of a guitar to make it sound more intense, a dictionary search reveals that it also means something with a fluffy image, such as cotton wool. The title of the album is also a perfect fit for Noodles' image, which is a combination of two contradictory things: a strong guitar sound and a feminine pop sense. Last year, Noodles was the opening act for THE BREEDERS, whom they respect, on their tour of Japan, and participated in the CMJ Music Marathon in New York. This year, Noodles' music, which had been a bit stiff within the existing music scene in Japan, has taken a new step forward through overseas activities, and the album "Fuzz hill" is a milestone.

約一年振りとなるヌードルスの新作は、まさに捨て曲無しの渾身の5曲を収録したミニアルバム。今作もプロデューサーに山中さわお・吉田仁を迎え、さらにミックスを全て吉田仁が手掛けた。前作のテーマでもあった"カッコよさ"が、今作のミニアルバムという形態の中により凝縮され、ヌードルスが持つ比類のないオルタナティブな楽曲センスと、ヨーコの切ない詩世界がミックスされ、独特な世界が堪能できる。タイトルの"Fuzz hill"のファズは、エレキギターに使用するエフェクターを思い浮かべる方も多いと思う。ギターの音を加工して、より激しい音色にする装置の意であったりする一方、辞書で調べると綿毛等のふわふわしたイメージを持つ物の意味もある。まさにタイトルからもヌードルスの力強いギターサウンドと、女性らしいポップセンスと言う相反する二つが組み合わさったイメージにピッタリでもある。昨年はメンバーがリスペクトするTHE BREEDERSの来日公演でのオープニングアクトや、NYで行われたCMJ Music Marathonに参加等、国内に限らず、海外での活動も精力的に取り入れた一年であり、そして今年は遂にUSツアーとSXSW出演も決定した。国内の既存の音楽の括りでは少し堅苦しそうだったヌードルスの楽曲が、海外の活動を通じて新たな一歩を踏み出す一年となり、その布石となるアルバムが"Fuzz hill"だ。
