Toru Matoba, who was begged by the god of special effects Eiji Tsuburaya to join Tsuburaya Productions, created the monster movie boom with "Ultra Q" and other works. A full-scale model of a whale head, 7 meters tall and weighing 3 tons, is used to depict the fierce battle between the men of the sea and the giant whale! The giant whale was sculpted by Fuminori Ohashi, who also worked on "Oeyama Shuten Doji," "Beastly Snowman," "Magma Ambassador," and "Prince of Monsters. The original story is "Whale God" by Koichiro Uno, winner of the 46th Akutagawa Award in 1961. Koichiro Uno was a popular author who later gained popularity for his sensual novels with a unique tone. Kaneto Shindo, who would later become a famous director of "Afternoon's Testament" and other works, adapted the screenplay. This is the first DVD release.

昭和の空想大特撮シリーズ第2弾!! 特撮は、特撮の神様・円谷英二に乞われて円谷プロに入社し「ウルトラQ」などで怪獣映画ブームを生み出した的場徹。クジラ頭部の実物模型高さ7m、重さ3tを用いて海の男たちと巨大鯨の壮絶な戦いを描き出す!! 巨大な鯨の造形を担当したのは「大江山酒天童子」「獣人雪男」「マグマ大使」「怪獣王子」などを手掛けた大橋史典。原作は1961年第46回芥川賞受賞の宇能鴻一郎の「鯨神」。宇能鴻一郎は後に独特の語調を持つ官能小説で人気を博した人気作家。また、脚色は後に「午後の遺言状」などの名監督となる新藤兼人。初DVD化。
