The fantastic color images in this film, which was made two years before Japan's first color film "Carmen Returns Home," had a great impact, as well as the bizarre nature of the story. The original color film was lost, so when the LD was released in 1992, the film was reproduced in the presence of the staff at the time. This time, the DVD faithfully reproduces the original footage! The music is by Akira Ifukube, the master composer who worked with Eiji Tsuburaya on "Godzilla. The atmosphere of the eerie mansion where the story takes place, and the atmosphere of mystery and weirdness of a Showa-era detective story are beautifully expressed through the music. The special effects are by Tatsuyuki Yokota, who was in charge of special effects for "Shaka" and also shot "Dirt and Soldiers. Legend has it that Eiji Tsuburaya participated in the special effects. This is the first DVD release.

昭和の空想大特撮シリーズ第2弾!! 本作は虹男のシーンのみをカラーで映像化したパートカラー作品。日本初のカラー映画「カルメン故郷に帰る」より2年も前に作られた本作の幻想的なカラー映像は、物語の怪奇性ともあいまって、インパクト絶大だった。このカラー部分のオリジナル・フィルムは失われたため、92年のLD発売時に当時のスタッフ立会いのもと映像を再現。今回はその映像に忠実にDVD化!! 音楽は「ゴジラ」でも円谷英二と組んだ名匠・伊福部昭。この物語の舞台となる不気味な屋敷の雰囲気、昭和の探偵小説の謎と怪奇の空気をその音楽で見事に演出している。特撮は「釈迦」の特撮を担当し、「土と兵隊」などを撮影した横田達之。特殊効果に円谷英二が参加したという伝説もある。初DVD化。
