いま改めて聴きたいスタンダード・ジャズの世界! コール・ポーター(1891～1964): ブロードウェイ界随一の洒脱さと都会の洗練さを持つソングライター。インディアナ州の富豪の家に生まれたポーターは、イェール大学在学中に作曲活動を始める。第一次世界大戦後はパリやヴェニスに邸宅を持ちパーティに明け暮れた。1919年に同じく富豪の娘リンダ・トーマスと結婚、両者は同性愛者という共通点があった。リンダはポーターの才能に惚れ込み、ヴェネツィアでサロンを開き夜な夜なポーターの作品を広めるサポートを行った。1920年代後半に帰米、1930年にミュージカル『ザ・ニューヨーカーズ』に提供した「ラヴ・フォー・セール」の歌詞が物議を醸し放送禁止処分になるも、1932年に手がけた『陽気な離婚』の大ヒットによりブロードウェイ作曲家としての地位を築く。1958年に落馬事故により右足を切断、1964年にサンタモニカでひっそりとこの世を去った。日本語解説付。
