いま改めて聴きたいスタンダード・ジャズの世界! ジョージ・ガーシュウィン (1898～1937): ロシア系ユダヤ移民の子としてブルックリンで生まれ、13歳の時にピアノを始める。ピアノは兄アイラのために父が買ってきたものだがアイラは文学肌で音楽に興味がなく、代わりに弟がピアノを習うことになった。15歳で学校をドロップアウトした後は当時ティン・パン・アレーと呼ばれた音楽出版社街で楽譜のデモ演奏をする仕事をし、そこで知り合った作詞家アーヴィング・シーザーと共作で「スワニー」を1919年に発表すると人気歌手アル・ジョンソンが唄いヒットし作曲家として独立。1920年代に入り作詞家となった兄とのチームで『レディ・ビー・グッド』や『ガール・クレイジー』など立て続けにミュージカルを成功させ、一躍ブロードウェイの人気作曲家となった。また1924年にはクラシック交響曲『ラプソディ・イン・ブルー』を発表しジャズとクラシックの融合を見せ高い評価を得た。1935年には初の黒人オペラとなる『ポーギーとベス』を発表し世間に衝撃を与えるも1937年に脳腫瘍のためこの世を去った。日本語解説付。
