With the movement around EP-4 gaining momentum, "EP-4 unit3" is set to release its first solo album! EP-4 unit3, consisting of Kaoru Sato and BANANA-UG, is one of the originators of the acoustic noise improvisation unit formed in the early 80s. Although they have contributed songs to a live compilation "CASE OF TELEGRAPH" in 1983, this is their first solo work. The content is based on the stage music for the Edo Ito Marashi Puppet Theater's September 2011 performance of "Arto 24 Jikan" (directed by Masahiko Akuto, puppet by Itsuki Yuki, original story by Soshi Suzuki), in which Sato and BANANA were in charge and Atsuhiro Ito made a guest appearance, and includes live performances as well as studio recordings. The work is filled with the profound dignity and black humor of the pioneer of noise-electronics units in the 1980s. 京都の伝説的ニューウェイブバンド: EP-4の中心人物、佐藤薫とEP-4オリジナルメンバーのBANANA-UGによるエレクトロ音響ユニットEP-4 unit3の単独アルバムがなんとBLACK SMOKER エクスペリメンタルシリーズからリリース!!! 神の啓示? 間違いなく近年のミュージック・シーンに一石を投じる重要作! 今年5月21日にフルバンドとして約30年ぶりのライヴを行なったEP-4。会場の代官山UNITには、佐藤薫をはじめ80年代当時のオリジナルメンバーに加え、ジム・オルーク、千住宗臣 (DCPRG、PARA他)、恒松正敏 (元フリクション)や中村達也 (LOSALIOS、フリクション他)らがサポートで登場。また、フロントアクトにOptrum (伊東篤宏)や、菊地成孔とMOODMANをDJに迎えた復活公演は、リアルタイムでEP-4を体験していない若い世代にも強烈な印象を与える。こうしてEP-4周辺の動きが勢いを増すなか、"EP-4 unit3"初となる単独アルバムがリリースされることになった! 佐藤薫とBANANA-UGによるEP-4 unit3は、80年代初期に組まれた音響系ノイズ即興ユニットのオリジネーターのひとつ。これまで83年のライヴ・コンピレーション『CASE OF TELEGRAPH』などへの楽曲提供はあったものの、単独作品はこれが初めてとなる。内容は、佐藤とBANANAが担当し伊東篤宏もゲスト出演した昨11年9月の江戸糸あやつり人形座公演『アルトー24時』 (演出: 芥正彦、人形演出: 結城一糸、原作: 鈴木創士)の舞台音楽をベースとしたもので、ライヴ演奏を中心にスタジオ録音も収録されています。ノイズ・エレクトロニクス・ユニットの80年代における先駆者らしい重厚な貫禄とブラック・ユーモアが散りばめられた作品。近年のラップトップ・ミュージックやノイズ、ドローン・ミュージックのシーンにも一石を投じる作品となるだろう。
