Beats and loops created on portable equipment while on tour form the foundation of the music, over which soaring choral flute melodies soar. The electronic rhythmic sequences depict a diasporic tale of progression. Shabaka also takes on rapping in this work, saying, "Andre 3000 is a song about fear and the need to be afraid. I was inspired by Andre 3000's willingness to explore new dimensions with sincerity and without fear or self-consciousness. So I decided to find my own voice with this album. In mid-2025, Shabaka ended his self-imposed hiatus from saxophone playing with a performance at a memorial concert for South African drum master Luis Moholo. This is the first recording made after a year and a half of not playing the saxophone, and it is also a recapitulation of the time spent focusing on the flute, and what the future holds for our relationship with the instrument. Brown Sugar was the first CD I ever bought, and it sparked a long-lasting curiosity about the emotional possibilities of a self-produced/self-performed album. It is a record that celebrates freedom in creative self-expression. Before Corona, I could only play clarinet and saxophone and knew nothing about music making or how to play the flute.
