Beyond Beauty. Taiwan From Above

[Machine Translation] A man who has been photographing from the sky every day for three years, risking his life to confront the land he loves. Director Chi Po-Lin, who has been taking aerial photographs as a government aerial photographer for more than 20 years, captures the present state of Taiwan in this documentary using the technique of aerial photography. --The camera drifts through the air, capturing various images of Taiwan. The beautiful mountains, sea, and countryside known as Formosa (Island of Splendor). On the other hand, it also brings into relief the reality of environmental destruction, such as white smoke emanating from factory chimneys and rivers flowing with factory effluent. 撮影期間3年―魂を削って、日々空から撮り続けた一人の男が人生を懸けて挑んだ、愛する大地との対峙。政府の航空写真家として20年以上航空写真を撮り続けてきたチー・ポーリン監督が、全編空撮という手法を用いて台湾の今を捉えたドキュメンタリー。――空中を漂うカメラは、台湾の様々な姿を捉えていく。フォルモサ(麗しの島)と呼ばれる美しい山・海・田園。一方で、工場の煙突から噴き出る白煙や、工場排水が流れてしまっている河川など、環境破壊の実態も浮き彫りにする。しかし、そういった自然環境だけではなく、人々の暮らしや日常の営みをも見つめていく。ラストには、台湾最高峰の玉山(3,952m)頂上から原住民の子供たちが誇り高く歌う様子が、まるで奇跡のように映し出される。
