Originally premiering at the 19th Tokyo International Film Festival event "Animecs TIFF 2006," this 40-minute feature gathered critical appraise. This theatrical feature is based on the original 1980 manga by Katsuhiro Otomo, featuring additional story elements Otomo left off of the original work completely done up 3D animation. Story: Summer, 2006. fifth grade boy Ryohei Ozaki discovers a notebook titled "Dai Tokyo Chika Tankenki" penned by his father when he was a boy. Inspired by the notebook, Ryohei gathers his friends and begins inspecting. One summer day this group of four inspectors go out searching for a hidden trasure under the manholes of Tokyo where they meet a wide variety of characters, setting them on a while journey.

ぼくらの秘密基地が、ここにある。大友克洋原作の劇場版最新作がDVDで早くもリリース!! 第19回東京国際映画祭・協賛企画「animecs TIFF 2006」において、40分という中編ながらワールドプレミアとしてお披露目され、喝采を浴びた1本の新作アニメ、それがこの『新SOS大東京探検隊』である。大友克洋の短編マンガ「SOS大東京探検隊」(初出「マンガ少年」1980年4月号/朝日ソノラマ)を原作に、当時描かれなかったアイデアを盛り込んで大胆にアレンジした続編。『スチームボーイ』で培ったデジタルの技術をさらに進化させ、3Dアニメの新境地に挑戦。従来の3DCGとは一線を画した自然で存在感のあるキャラクター描写が、アニメ業界を中心に各方面の熱い注目を集めている。日本の伝統的なセルアニメの手法を継承する、真に画期的な3Dアニメが誕生した。2007年5月全国劇場公開作品。――2006年、夏。5年生の尾崎竜平は、父親の昇平が小学生のときに書いた「大東京地下探検記」というノートを見つける。そこで竜平はチャット仲間の俊と義雄を誘って、新しく探検隊を結成。夏休みのある日、勝手についてきた弟のサスケを加えた4人で、地図に記された秘密の宝物をめざして、マンホールから地下に降りる。やがて少年たちは地下で暮らす又吉と出会い、誰もいないと思われた世界に怪しげで、しかし気のいいオトナが数多く住み着いていることを知る。子どもたちは住人に歓迎されるが、それで何かのタガが外れたのか、旧日本陸軍の生き残りと称する山下老人や、義雄のいとこの桃代までも巻き込んで、居住地は謎の運動家たちが繰り出す火炎瓶と38歩兵銃の銃弾が飛び交う戦場となる。果たして、地下に隠された"日本の宝"の正体とは――? ブックレット封入。
