      Awesome 5

With singles like TABOO and That Ain't Cool this album stacks up with Koda Kumi's previous releases, and is a must for all fans

      A very enjoyable album. 5

I first discovered Koda Kumi a couple of years ago through her song "キューティーハニー (Cutie Honey)" and while I thought it was a good song, I didn't take much notice and disregarded it quickly; I considered it an OK song, at the time. Later, I discovered Kumi's song "TABOO" which I instantly liked, and became a song I could not stop playing. This is when I looked up Koda Kumi and found she had been around for a number of years, so I looked up various songs and eventually discovered she was going to release her "TRICK" album. Due to my new fascination with her, I ordered the limited edition. When I recieved it, I was ecstatic and listened to it non-stop. Many people criticize the "TRICK" album and consider "Kingdom" to be better or because it didn't sell nearly half as many as "Black Cherry" but numbers do not matter to me; music does. I was instantly impressed by the introduction track. In Western album, you don't get interludes quite like that. SO, it was unusual, but I liked it. The second track "TABOO" I already thought was amazing. The dance-pop number with slightly, well, taboo lyrics is still a favorite now. "show girl" is another really catchy song that will get stuck in you head, I instantly liked it, the music video has a 'Moulin Rouge' feel and is fun to watch. I did not at first like "Your Love," but later, it appealed to me and I'm not sure why. I'm not a big fan of ballads but I quite like the track and the final part of the chorus gets stuck in your head 'Can you stay with me, いつまでも.' I'm not a big fan of "stay with me" because, as previously said, I'm not a lover of ballads, however, I do not dislike the song I can listen to it, and sing to it, but it is not a favorite. Kumi vocals are very strong in this song, though. "This is not a love song" is an amazing song that instantly sticks out. It makes you feel energetic and want to dance to the song and is very fun to sing to, especially the 'Ahh, Maria' parts between verses. "Driving" is another energetic song that makes you want to dance. The chorus is also very catchy: 'Driving どこでも連れてくよ行く先は君が決めていい.' "Bling Bling Bling" is also a very fun song with an awesome chorus which is incredibly fun to sing with the urban feel to the song is part of it's appeal. The Fergie and Koda Kumi duet "That Ain't Cool" is also a very enjoyable track, while not a favorite, the fact that it is mostly English and has Fergie in it is part of it's appeal to me, obviously, natively speaking English and being a fan of Fergie. "Hurry Up!" has a slight rock feel and is also quite aggressive as she shouts at the beginning of the chorus and the main parts of the song is sung in an electronically-altered, distorted voice. "Moon Crying" is my favorite Kumi ballad and the music video at one point brought me to tears. It is an amazing song, and that is how I shall describe it. "JUST THE WAY YOU ARE" comes off as a relaxing song, to me. It also reminds me of a summer scene, especially after watching the music video. I don't enjoy "Joyful" very much, I find the song boring but, once again, I can still listen to it. "愛のことば" is my least favorite song off the album. It is majorly overshadowed by the other ballads and seems out of place in the album. "Venus" is an incredibly fun song full of energy and music delight, however, due to the absence of the 'V' in Japanese, Kumi pronounces it "Benus" which sounds like another word, which makes me laugh. Overall, I love the 'TRICK' album and disagree with anyone who instantly puts it down because it's didn't sell well and related subjects. I feel it is one of her best.

No TRICK for a good album 4

As always, this album from Koda Kumi is a GREAT album. There are both sweet ballads ("Your Love", "AI NO KOTOBA"...) and strong songs ("TABOO", "This is not a love song"...). I think it's a "complete" album since there is a lot of good songs even if some of them are a little "weak" for the all album. Anyway, Miss Kumi doesn't dissapoints us and makes us being waiting for the next one !

      Trick! Trick! - that's my TRICK! 3

TRICK is what appears to be a diverse album, but not quite. If you have heard the previous couple of Koda Kumi's albums you will most likely notice that this one doesn't really bring anything new. For instance "Joyful" is pretty much a clone of "WIND" when it comes to both composition and the arrangement, not that the track itself is bad. "Bling Bling Bling" sounds a bit like Jade Valerie's "Uh La La" and the duet with Fergie was a huge mistake. On a more positive side the album has some amazing upbeat tracks that re-introduce Koda Kumi to electro pop - "TABOO" and "Driving" are most likely the best tracks on the album! Sadly most of the ballads such as "Stay with me" and "Your Love" are way too generic, but "Moon Crying" really makes up for those two and would be even better if they put the "Piano Version" from her single "MOON" on TRICK. "愛のことば" isn't bad at all either. The cover of "Venus" is also really good too and I consider it one of the better tracks on TRICK. If you forget there are a couple of tracks on this album it turns out into a very good one. On the other hand it fails to impress as a "whole". Ku can do better!
