Description

Steven Spielberg's first WWII movie (followed by "Schindler's List" and "Saving Private Ryan") is based on J. G. Ballard's autobiographical novel about a young British boy named Jim Graham who is separated from his parents when the Japanese Army invades areas in China occupied by the British. Captured and taken to a POW camp, he is throwon into a life of survival along with captured Amrican pilots. This film marks the big-screen debut of Christian Bale ("American Psycho," "Velvet Goldmine") if you don't count his small role in the nice little fantasy film called "Mio in the Land of Faraway" which came out the same year (1987). In terms of visual style, Spielberg's directing is impeccable and I doubt anyone could have done a better job. Brilliant performances by the cast, Bale (as Jim) and John Malkovich (as Basie, an American prisoner) in particular.
