This third and final album from cult favourites Big Star (in the 70s) sounds like it was made by a band who didn't give a care anymore about what their label or fans for that matter, wanted. After two brilliant but thoroughly underappreciated power-pop albums (#1 Record and Radio City), Alex Chilton and Jody Stephens trundled on with the help of assorted friends to record this cynical and depressing-sounding album. Coupled with echo-laden vocals and guitars, the album is a great 'companion' to those dark, dark nights of the soul. BUT that is the beauty of this album! Third or Sister Lovers (no one could decide on the final name or running order of the album) was never released 'properly' until Ryko unearthed the masters and did a decent job of it in the early 90's. This paper sleeve edition replicates that running order and includes the bonus tracks as well. The only thing different is that they used the original cover art-work of one of the versions that was actually released. This album cemented Big Star's cult status and was highly influential to the alternative rock movement of the late 80's and early 90's.
