Description

From the grief of loss to eternal gratitude and hope. The 13th album from MONO, Japan's world-renowned instrumental rock band. Following the passing of their longtime collaborator and friend Steve Albini, this work was created with Brad Wood. When MONO recorded their previous album "OATH" with Steve Albini, their longtime production partner and friend, in 2023, they never imagined that it would become the last studio album they made together. Albini tragically passed away the following year. That loss left an immeasurable void not only in the lives of everyone who knew Steve, but also in the lives of everyone who has cherished the thousands of records he helped bring into the world over the past 40 years. He brought clarity to chaos and devoted an unparalleled spirit of selfless service to art and artists. Both personally and practically, the loss brought MONO deep sadness and anxiety. Albini had become a fundamental part of shaping MONO's one-of-a-kind sound, and even thinking about finding someone to take his place was an enormous matter. That is where Brad Wood comes in. Chosen both because he understood MONO's creative and technical production process well and because he had a decades-long friendship with Steve Albini, Brad Wood entered Electrical Audio, a place closely associated with Albini, in September 2025 to record the work that became "Snowdrop." Once again teaming up with Chicago-based conductor and orchestral musical director Chad McCullough, MONO welcomed a ten-piece orchestra and an eight-member choir for the eight grand songs that make up this work. The place where the band performed and Wood recorded is also a sacred space where MONO has created many of its works over its 25-year career. That is why the songs on this work carry even greater weight. The album was mixed at Wood's home studio Seagrass in Los Angeles and became a work with both intimacy and embrace. It would not be strange for this work to be touched by dark shadows. However, what is actually there is an extraordinary sense of gratitude. Rather than sinking into grief, there is heartfelt gratitude for the sound of a life spent sharing fulfilling time with a dear friend, and a longing for what comes next. This work is the sound of a band transforming shock and sadness into hope and wonder, and finding a new focus in the freedom of remaining uncertain. "Everyone, without exception, eventually leaves this world and faces parting with loved ones. With this album, we wanted to express 'eternal gratitude' toward the irreplaceable people who walked with us on the journey of life. We believe that only that feeling can fill the emptiness left in the heart and ease the deep sadness and pain of loss. Each flower has its own meaning. On this album, we placed the messages entrusted to flowers offered to the departed into the song titles. We hope this album becomes a source of light and hope for those who have lost someone dear to them." - MONO / Domestic edition of an imported release.

Snowdrop / MONO
