Kaiju Daifunsen: Daigoro vs. Goliath

I had heard about DAIGORO VS GOLIATH for years, and finally bought it because it's the only Toho kaiju eiga that I had never seen. It's obviously aimed at children who are not even ready to see a Gamera film. As such, it's not bad at all, but Daigoro's giant "W.C." would have been considered unacceptable in the USA back in 1972, and perhaps even today. So, it's not too surprising that there was never a USA version, though I hope that there will be one someday...Tokyo Shock, maybe? DAIGORO VS GOLIATH combines giant monsters and broad comedy, and resembles Tsuburaya's most famous production, the ULTRA MAN TV series. The monsters, certainly, would not look out of place in that series. Daigoro even resembles Red King with a hippopotamus head. The baby Daigoro looks rather like Minilla, i.e., Godzilla's son. The effects and camera work are not bad at all, and actually outshine the Godzilla titles of its time. The presence of Akiji Kobayashi adds to the ULTRA MAN-ish vibe of the movie. I'd recommend DAIGORO VS GOLIATH to jaded kaiju fans who are looking for something different- it certainly fills that bill.
