Barnes, well-known in Japan for his brass band works such as "Alvamar Overture" and "Prayer and Toccata", composed his fifth symphony in 2000 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Central Band. The entire composition is based on the legend of the phoenix, which is a reference to Japan's recovery from the devastation of the war. The banda of Meiden High School of Aichi Institute of Technology played a major role in the performance, and the overwhelmingly large ensemble filled the concert hall to the brim with emotion.

マスターズ・ブラス・ナゴヤ/ジェームス・バーンズ『PHOENIX』。"音楽を楽しむ"をコンセプトに、『伝統と革新』を追求する、マスターズ・ブラス・ナゴヤ誕生!! このCDは2016年4月10日に愛知県芸術劇場コンサートホールにて行われた第一回定期演奏会のライブ録音。「アルヴァマー序曲」「祈りとトッカータ」などの吹奏楽作品で日本にお馴染みのJ.バーンズが、陸上自衛隊中央音楽隊総隊50周年を記念して2000年に作曲した5番目の交響曲。戦争の痛手から立ち直った日本を、不死鳥伝説と重ね合わせて全体が構成され、愛知工業大学名電高等学校のバンダが大活躍するも、圧倒的な大団円により満席のコンサートホールを感動に包み込んだ圧巻な演奏。
