客を喜ばすためならと、天然痘でできた顔のあばたに何本もの煙管 (キセル)をぶら下げるという驚異の芸を編み出した、上方芸人の鬼のような壮絶な生き様を描く衝撃的な作品。──明治の末に、大阪の寄席で居並ぶ大家の落語より人気を集めた桂馬喬。しかし天然痘にかかってしまった桂馬喬は、無残なあばた顔になった。芸への執念で桂馬喬は誰もが真似できない芸を生み出した。それは自分の歪み窪んだあばた顔に煙管を吊した芸。毎日その数を増やし、客の人気を集め、一本でも多く吊るそうと顔の窪みを深くするため絶食した。数十本の煙管を吊るした桂馬喬は35歳で死んだ。
