Description
The show was produced when there was no word for OVA yet. As soon as "Area 88" appeared on the market, it's quality story-telling and animation impressed the jaded anime viewers back then. Based on the manga by Kaoru Shintani, the show's hero is Shin Kazama, a pilot who is forced to play mercenary at Area 88, a Foreign Legion unit, as a result of the betrayal of his devious friend, Satoru Kanzaki. The drama follows his struggle to find his freedom, battle he's forced engage, his love for a girl named Ryoko, and his friendships with his unit mates. This film was originally released theatrically in 1986.

まだOVA (オリジナル・ビデオ・アニメーション)という言葉すら定着していなかった時期に製作され、発売されるやそのクオリティの高さで注目され驚異的なヒットを記録した「エリア88」。今や伝説となったあの名作が遂にDVDで登場。原作は新谷かおるの同名コミック。友であった神崎悟の卑怯な罠により、中東にある“エリア88”と呼ばれる外人部隊の基地で傭兵パイロットとして戦う事を強いられた風間真。彼の自由へ向かっての葛藤を、壮絶空中戦、恋人・涼子への愛、宿敵神崎との確執、外人部隊の仲間達との友情を交えて描いた、壮大なスケールのアニメーション。今回は1986年に劇場公開された作品を「エリア88 劇場版」、また1986年に「ACTIII 燃える蜃気楼」としてビデオで発売された作品を「エリア88 燃える蜃気楼」と題し、DVD化。
