香里奈、成宮寛貴、谷原章介、など時代を担う若手フィルムスターたちが競演!! 沖縄の広大なさとうきび畑を舞台に、"きび刈り隊"に志願した7人の若者たちを描く青春ドラマ。詩人・長田弘の詩集「深呼吸の必要」のタイトルを冠し、監督には「はつ恋」「昭和歌謡大全集」「天国の本屋～恋火～」で高い評価を得た"篠原哲雄"、そして「ちゅらさん」シリーズ脚本家・岡田惠和の企画を受けて、脚本は「ホワイトアウト」「卒業」の長谷川康夫が担っている。また、音楽に稀代のメロディーメーカー小林武史、主題歌をMY LITTLE LOVERが担当。特典映像約40分収録の特典Disc付き(香里奈の宮古島・沖永良部島案内、笹原監督インタビュー、おじい・おばあの撮影秘話、「深呼吸の必要」ミュージッククリップ(MY LITTLE LOVER)を収録)。
