初期のナポリ楽派において、オペラの発展に力を尽くしたアレッサンドロ・スカルラッティを父に持つドメニコ・スカルラッティ。スペイン王室に仕えた彼は、バルバラ王女のために555曲の練習曲=ソナタを作曲、この多彩な曲集は基本的にチェンバロの演奏技術を高めるためのものだが、現代のピアノで演奏すると、また違った魅力が開花することでも知られ、ホロヴィッツやリパッティら、20世紀のピアニストたちがそれぞれに好きな曲を選び、思い思いの演奏を繰り広げている。ソナタといっても基本的に単一楽章で、2分から4分程度に凝縮された音楽はどれも独自の魅力を放っている。リストの「パガニーニ練習曲: 初稿版」で卓越した技巧を披露したゴラン・フィリペツの演奏による2016年録音。
